How modern stick formats are changing the way face masks are applied and creating new possibilities for innovative skincare concepts.
Face masks have been among the most popular skincare products for years. Traditionally, they are applied from jars, sachets or tubes. But beauty routines are changing: people want skincare that is effective, quick, intuitive and easy to use.
This is where the face mask stick comes in. It brings the familiar concept of a face mask into a compact stick format, allowing for direct, targeted application. But it changes more than the packaging: it also places new demands on texture, stability, skin feel and formulation.
Why choose a face mask in stick form?
A face mask stick is applied directly to clean, dry skin. You can easily avoid the eye and lip areas while targeting specific areas of the face.
The stick format offers several practical benefits:
- Direct, even application
- No brush or spatula needed
- Less contact between the product and your hands
- Less contact between the product and your hands
- Easy to control how much product you apply
- Compact format for everyday use
This combination is especially appealing for modern skincare routines. Application remains quick and easy, while the face mask still feels like a special treatment.
A face mask stick is more than a traditional mask in different packaging. The formulation must be firm enough to hold its shape in the stick, yet glide comfortably over the skin and spread evenly. It also needs to rinse off easily after the recommended treatment time.
Two formulation approaches for different skincare concepts
Our product development team has created two variants, each focusing on a different aspect of modern facial skincare.
Clay & Hyaluronic Acid Face Mask Stick
The first variant combines a classic clay mask concept with hydrating and nourishing ingredients.
Clay is traditionally used in purifying face masks. It helps leave the skin feeling fresh, clean and balanced, making it well suited to products designed to give the complexion a clearer, more refined appearance.
Hyaluronic acid adds a moisture-binding component to this approach. Glycerin, butylene glycol and panthenol further help leave the skin feeling soft and cared for after use.
The formulation brings together two skincare needs that are not always addressed in clay masks: purifying care and hydration.
A possible positioning for this variant is:
Clarifying Care. Hydration. Freshness.
Niacinamide Face Mask Stick Without Titanium Dioxide
The second variant puts niacinamide at the centre of the formulation and contains no titanium dioxide.
Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, is one of the most versatile ingredients in modern skincare. It is often used in products designed to promote a more even, balanced and healthy-looking complexion.
Niacinamide is complemented by clay, glycerin, butylene glycol, panthenol and aloe vera. Together, these ingredients create a concept that combines purifying care with hydration and a pleasant skin feel.
Compared with the classic clay variant, this formulation places greater emphasis on radiance, care and a more even-looking complexion.
Why is a formulation without titanium dioxide of interest?
Titanium dioxide, listed as “Titanium Dioxide” in the INCI list, is used in cosmetic formulations as a white pigment and for its colouring or visual effect. It is also found in many clay mask sticks currently on the market.
A variant without titanium dioxide can therefore offer another way for brands to stand out and appeal to those looking for this type of formulation.
This distinction should be presented objectively: leaving out titanium dioxide does not imply a general judgement about other formulations. It is a deliberate product development choice that may also help position the finished product.
An active ingredient alone doesn’t make a good face mask.
Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid or clay can provide an appealing starting point for a product concept. But whether they make a compelling face mask stick depends on how the entire formulation works together.
The following factors, among others, need to be considered during development:
- Ingredient concentrations and combinations
- Even application across the skin
- Smooth glide and even product release
- The stick’s ability to retain its shape
- How the skin feels during and after application
- Defined treatment time
- Ease of rinsing off the formulation
- Compatibility between the formulation and packaging
- Stability throughout the product’s shelf life
With a rinse-off product in particular, the scientifically documented properties of an individual active ingredient cannot automatically be attributed to the finished product. Its actual performance depends on the ingredient’s concentration, the formulation base, the time it remains on the skin and how the ingredients work together.
Claims such as “hydrating”, “radiance” or “helps promote an even-looking complexion” should therefore be supported by evidence for the final formulation.
How to Use a Face Mask Stick
Apply the mask stick evenly to clean, dry facial skin, avoiding the eye and lip areas.
After the treatment time specified for the finished product, rinse the mask off thoroughly with water. Then apply your usual facial skincare products.
How often the face mask stick should be used depends on the final formulation, its clay content, the intended skincare concept and how well the skin tolerates it.
New Opportunities for Cosmetics Brands
Face mask sticks combine a familiar skincare product with a modern, visually appealing way to apply it. This gives cosmetics brands several ways to position their products:
- Clarifying Care with Clay and Hyaluronic Acid
- Glow Care with Niacinamide
- Targeted Care for Different Areas of the Face
- Easy Facial Care for Modern Routines
- Compact Skincare Treatments for Use on the Go
- An Addition to Existing Stick or Skincare Ranges
The key is to ensure that the formulation, application, packaging and messaging work together as a coherent whole.
Is the Face Mask Stick the Future of Face Masks?
Traditional face masks will continue to have a place in skincare. The face mask stick, however, adds a modern alternative to the category.
It combines targeted application with a compact format and opens up new possibilities for ingredient led skincare concepts. Whether formulated with clay and hyaluronic acid or with niacinamide and without titanium dioxide, the stick format shows how familiar product categories can be reimagined in both function and appearance.
Velvety develops and manufactures custom private label cosmetics, from the initial product idea and formulation development through to production at scale.
